The mission of Hope House began with a vision.
In 1967, a group of volunteers led by then-Father Howard Hubbard began a small treatment facility for men in the South End of Albany, New York. Hope House was founded to respond to the housing, emergency food, and neighborhood needs of an inner-city community.
Since that vision came to reality, thousands of men, women, children, and teenagers have come to our facilities seeking help and looking for hope.
Hope House, a non-denominational agency, was the first in the area to utilize professional staff in a program for people recovering from alcohol and substance use disorders. Hope House has evolved into a nationally recognized, multi-service agency providing a range of high quality, community-based treatment services.
In 2014, a residential facility was built on Livingston Avenue in Albany. The facility, which includes a recreational facility with a full-sized gymnasium, was built with a $4.2 million grant from the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support.
On September 16, 2017, 50 years of hope, help and recovery were celebrated with the Hope House Golden Anniversary Gala at 90 State Street in Albany. The Guest of Honor was actress Mackenzie Phillips, the daughter of John Phillips of “The Mamas and the Papas” and an actress in the hit television show “One Day at a Time” as well as the movie “American Graffiti.” Miss Phillips told her story of childhood trauma, addiction, sobriety, recovery, relapse, and her work as a Primary Addictions Counselor. Miss Phillips graciously provided a signed copy of her book, “Hopeful Healing” to each guest.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Circle of Hope Award, to now- Bishop Emeritus Howard Hubbard. He accepted the award on behalf of all who have made Hope House a success.
Fueled by compassion, Father Hubbard and a small group of concerned citizens began a legacy that continues today — of helping people restore their own lives.
